Mumbai plans 9- storey Car Park
May 28, 2009
The proposal to build a 9-storey car park at Mumbai was
discussed by MMRDA officials, Mumbai`s traffic police,
officials from the state`s town-planning department and
the BMC on May 26. Six out of the 59 proposals that were
presented for the same came from developers and land owners
of mills, namely Kohinoor, Mumbai, Jupiter and Elphinstone
Mills. Planned at the Jupiter Mills compounds at Lower Parel,
the 9-storey car park will accommodate 2,370 cars. This car
park would cover an area of over 1 lakh sq m, and be adorned
with LED screens that show the number of vehicles parked,
flickering lights to indicate vacant slots and traffic censors
installed at entry and exit points. The approval of a private
developer at Jupiter Mills will initiate the project to action.
According to conditions set by the traffic police, the developer
cannot restrict parking on nearby roads or lure commuters to
park in this lot. Public parking space will not be provided for
commercial purposes and leasing it out would not be allowed and
parking spaces for buses and trucks too would be provided. An
exclusive entry point at Senapati Bapat Road and exit point at
Fitwala Road with a total of 11 gates, including three emergency
ones, would be provided. An integrated CCTV system and well
equipped control rooms with video walls are planned for better
security. There will be fire-exit connectors, five parking spaces
for the physically-handicapped and generators of suitable capacity
as a stand-by power source. The car park will provide the city
with much relief considering the current traffic situation. |
